S.M.A.R.T. Solution for Transformational Change

The S.M.A.R.T. Solution for Transformational Change is a school-based, highly targeted and intensively supported process led by the school’s S.M.A.R.T. Leadership Team. The S.M.A.R.T. Solution for Transformational Change is specifically designed to support schools that have selected the Transformation or Turnaround models for school improvement. QLD can either serve as the Lead Change Agent or in a supporting role.

The Improvement Process

The Solution is based on our proprietary S.M.A.R.T. Goal Process, a job-embedded professional development model that builds capacity and ensures continuous use of data to inform and differentiate instruction. The process begins with a thoughtful and thorough assessment of needs, culture and history that honors and builds on the school’s successes.

A two-day on-site training introduces a data-driven goal setting and instructional change methodology which is then followed by 3 on-site and up to 6 tele-supported coaching sessions for the Site Leadership Team and Principal over the course of the first year. (This is the essence of the process, which will be modified to address the specific requirements of the State and Local Education Agencies involved.)

Professional Development

QLD Consultants will deliver professional development that is focused on the needs assessment and school’s Greatest Area of Need (GAN). Additional professional development will be provided based on the needs of the school. Examples include:

  • Instructional best practices in a particular content area
  • Developing and using common assessments to inform and differentiate
  • Facilitated sessions on meeting the needs of special populations.

Coaching

The School Leadership Team will be supported by a certified QLD Coach in applying these tools and strategies. Coaching sessions will also serve to provide modeling and feedback to staff and the Principal.

Measuring Improvement

Our S.M.A.R.T. Solutions Measurement System (SSMS) will be used to gather evidence of implementation, monitor goal progress on student achievement and assess the degree to which cultural change is occurring.

Outcomes

As a result of participating in the S.M.A.R.T. Transformation, the Principal and school-based teacher leaders will develop and incorporate practical tools and strategies for:

  • improving student results through ongoing target monitoring and feedback
  • increasing focus on student learning and achievement through strategic use of S.M.A.R.T. Goals
  • increasing leadership capacity at the school site through skillful and purposeful collaboration.

S.M.A.R.T. Materials

Each team member will receive training materials and a copy of two of our acclaimed and widely-used resources - The Handbook for S.M.A.R.T. School Teams and The Power of SMART Goals.
